Stratford Town (A) 25/08/2017

Another first this upcoming Saturday when we pay an inaugural visit to Stratford Town and their Knights Lane home.

Our hosts have made a solid but not spectacular start to the season.....https://www.sofascore.com/lowestoft-town-stratford-town/fkpsoup

They were formed interestingly, during the war years in 1941, and have seen steady progress since then ....http://www.stratfordtownfc.co.uk/a/stfc-club-history-49894.html

Like us, they are a much changed outfit from last season and to date have seen eight players make their debuts.

Nathan Vaughan, their keeper, was a name that rang a bell. Anyone else remember these unsavoury scenes......http://www.lowestoftjournal.co.uk/sport/worcester-city-goalkeeper-tried-to-bite-...
I trust there will be no repeat on Saturday.

Difficult to predict this early season mid table contest;  let's hope for another committed 90+ minutes and a similar outcome to Hitchin.

For those making the trip have a safe one.

An early strike from Bammant, and a goal apiece for Fowkes and Zielonka late on, saw  the Trawlerboys seal the points in a closely fought encounter today at
Stratford.

It might have been so different if the home side had taken one of the many chances they created but with outstanding performances from the Lowestoft back line, in particular Rossi Jarvis, the visitors better finishing was what separated the two sides.

Lowestoft started brightly on a rain soaked surface and took the lead through Bammant, who finished smartly with a left footed drive, that found the bottom corner on 3 minutes. Higgs looked menacing all afternoon with his darting runs and but for some last ditch defending he might well have doubled our advantage on 10 mins.

The slick passing and movement of the Lowestoft side saw them control matters for the better part of the half but Stratford looked dangerous on the break and Puttnins did well to parry a couple of efforts to safety. In doing so he managed to pull a hamstring and looked to be moving very gingerly for the remainder of the half. He was given no chance when Claudio Dias levelled on 40 mins with a  well struck effort from 10 yards out. HT 1-1

It was was no surprise when Elvijs retired hurt at half time, handing the gloves to Reynolds, for his first appearance in over five years, following his retirement. He was soon called into action as Stratford upped the tempo and the home side looked the more likely to take the lead. They got around the back of us on numerous occasions but a combination of poor finishing and solid defending with Deekes and Jarvis marshalling our back line, we didn't succumb.

The encounter became stretched from beyond the hour mark and followed an end to end pattern. Bammant went close with a deflected effort that cannoned off the post but neither side could find the breakthrough. Deekes was booked for a pull back on Shariff as a ball over the top set him free. The resulting free kick came to nothing and the game them descended into a niggly encounter with the referee taking centre stage brandishing cards to Zielonka and Higgs.

It wasn't until the introduction of Fowkes that the game turned. His first meaningful touch on 83 mins saw him strike a drive that evaded the outstretched arm of Vaughan and restore our lead. The tall and powerful Stratford side then then excerted themselves and created three chances that Reynolds did well to smother.

As the minutes ticked down Lowestoft finally put the contest to bed with the goal of the game. Higgs swept down the left swapping passes with Bammant and Zielonka and finding himself inside the box he set up the Polish midfielder with a ball that begged to be hit. And it duly was, leaving the home keeper with no chance. 3-1 game over 88 mins.

This was as good a performance that I have witnessed in many a season and is testament to Godders, Tanns and Reynolds coaching. The football we played all afternoon was attractive and penetrating with the hoof not in evidence. It's no wonder with performances like this that we find ourselves in the top half of the table this evening.

A faltering Kings Lynn next up and an opportunity for us to grab the bragging rights.
Domestic duties and extended travel times do not permit me to make this one.
But I hope to be at Bedworth and experience more of the same entertainment that the the team served up this afternoon.
